What is a Petticoat dress?

If you are looking for a Petticoat dress you will probably end up here, in this blog, as such a thing as a petticoat dress doesn’t actually exist. Of course there are dresses, which allow you to wear a Petticoat UNDERNEATH and you can wear a petticoat as a dress, if you like to switch underwear and outerwear, which was by the way popular in the nineties when pop stars like Madonna wore corset and bra as a costume. Actually, the petticoat is just a underskirt, an undergarment to be worn under a skirt or dress.

Petticoat dress and rock ‘roll…

Rock ’n roll made the petticoat popular, in the fifties. Girls liked to be lifted by rockers in leather jackets. They simply wore a pair of sneakers under their skirts and performed fantastic acrobatic elements, such as a body roll or a somersault. Underwear became regularly visible. According to me, one of the reasons to wear a petticoat under a wide skirt.

Pettipants to pad a petticoat dress

petticoatPettipants, which create the same effect, have even been designed. You shouldn’t wear them under your skinny jeans as the pettipants make your buttock, belly and hips more voluminous. Actually, the contrary of shapewear. Unless you prefer an extra size. A lot of ladies wear a push-up bra, but hip- and buttock padding, that’s new to me, although I have heard of  jeans which lift your bottom and shapewear with a similar effect. It’s logical, as elastic laces up. You can squeeze out a pair of buttocks, but it will be hard for hips. I suggest someone tries on the pettipants under a stretch pants and lets me know what it looks like, probably like a  stuffed sausage. After all, there is nothing better than real muscles or love handles which usually consist of soft connective tissue, fat.

A mini-purse in your petticoat dress

It’s a shame there aren’t any dresses which allow you to safely store your IPhone or wallet, even when performing acrobatic stunts. Actually, I wonder if pickpockets or bag snatchers already existed in the fifties. In those days ladies had a purse or clutch without a belt. Shoulder belts were not done. Chanel introduced a belt, as she hated full hands…in one hand champagne, in the other the clutch….Nowadays a clutch with shoulder belt is a problem as well, as the clutch hits your partner’s head during roll dancing or salsa. Perhaps it might be a good idea for designers to include a mini-purse in the lining of your petticoat dress, large enough for your cash card and smartphone?
